What is rain shadow? Would you find this effect on the windward or leeward side of a mountain? What type of environment would you expect on either side of the mountain?

Rain shadow is a region having little rainfall because it is sheltered from prevailing rain-bearing winds by a range of hills. As winds rise up the windward side of the mountain, the air cools and precipitation falls. On the other side of the mountain range, the leeward side, the air is dry, and it sinks. So, there is very little precipitation on the leeward side of a mountain range.
