How did the embargo reinvigorate both the Federalist Party and the industrial economy?

Embargo had effect of reviving fed party. Leaders hurled nullification of embargo into teeth of "VA lordlings" in Washington. 1808, polls show Feds have more electoral votes (from 14 in 1804, to 47 in 1808). New England talk of secession, Jefferson admitted that he felt gov foundations tremble under foot. New England pluck new prosperity from embargo- Yankees reopened old factories and erected new ones. Foundations of America's industry laid behind embargo, followed by non-intercourse and War of 1812.

Embargo failed because underestimated the bulldog determination of British and overestimated dependence of belligerents and America's trade. Bumper grain crops blessed British Isles and revolutionary Latin America unexpectedly threw open ports for commerce. Napoleon could afford to tighten belt and go without American trade. French continued to seize American ships and steal cargoes- mocked U.S. Jefferson miscalculated unpopularity of self-crucifying weapon and difficulty of enforcing it. Embargo not continued long enough for tightly enough to achieve desired results.
