Therapeutic management includes speed in recognition of signs and symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction because death can occur within minutes. Maintaining an open airway is critical, because the bronchioles constrict, making it difficult to breathe. An agent to counteract the extreme vasodilation, such as epinephrine, is often the key to survival.
