My essay on Trump's immigration policy

Immigration has been a challenge in the U.S. in almost all presidential errors with no substantial solutions. The complexities and complications that arise out of immigration law have been one cause of frustration to the country and to immigrants. Topping these problems associated with legally obtaining residency, records showed that both legal and illegal immigrants into the country had been increasing every year. The increasing immigrants have constantly strained resources leading the country into economic, diplomatic and security chaos (The Center for Immigration Studies para.1). While vying for his presidential seat and during his inaugural speech, President Trump vowed to make America great again. One of the ways through which he has been trying to make that achievement is by altering immigration policies to revamp the country’s immigration system. Therefore, this essay will discuss the negative effect of his policies on immigrant families, their divisive impact on United States and explore the strategic adjustments he can make.

There are significant advantages to Trump’s immigration policies but also serious cons that cannot and should not be ignored. The primary concern of the President of the United States (POTUS), that is, Donald Trump is to protect American industries and labor force (Amadeo para.1). Some of the policies threaten mass deportations of immigrants while others have attempted banning visas for immigrants and refugees from specific countries (Amadeo para.15). The bans and deportations have the potential of reducing the costs to the government by both legal and illegal immigrants in the country. Besides, migrants into the country have increased the unemployment rate among U.S. born citizens due to the cheap labor they avail to the market causing the government to spend a substantial amount of the budget in taking care of them. A reduction in the number of people legally or illegally entering the country as well as repatriation of some of those already in the nation will give back U.S. jobs to citizens.

Despite the visible benefits that America is likely to rip from Trump’s policies, the cost to immigrant families and the United States is quite hefty. The dogmas adapted by the Trump government have had several negative impacts. However, the greatest challenge and which has been termed “atrocious” and “unforgivable” is the policy separation of children from their parents (Lind para.4). The policy, which is currently being exercised across the U.S.-Mexico, the largest source of immigrants in the country has led to the separation of thousands of families as parents are detained and jailed while their young ones are taken into government custody and foster care (Lind para.2). It is not just the separation that is wrong but also the basis and circumstances under which children are being taken away from their parents.

Fundamentally, while Trump has been keen on drawing up and altering policies to fit his intentions and actions, there is no policy that supports the separation happening along the Mexico border. Rather, what exists is a policy encouraging the criminal prosecution of all adults apprehended for illegally crossing the border. As the parents of the parents who face a federal judge are sent into prison, their children are taken away by the government (Lind para.7). Secondly, some of the officers patrolling the borders have been lying to the parents about taking away their children. Most parents are being told that their children will be given back to them only to realize that they will never see them again. The incidences happening at the border are traumatic for both the children and the parents, which makes this a humanitarian case.

To add to the woes of the Trump policies and acts along the borders is the fact that it is contributing negatively to the unity of Americans. The U.S. has for long been battling ethnic based discrimination against the minority groups in the country with limited success. Mexicans are part of the minority groups in the country and the issues being experienced at the border do not auger well for the country. Ideally, they are contributing to the intensification of animosity between the minority groups and the majority Whites in the country.

Trump’s actions are doing more than just divide the ordinary Americans, most of who are outraged by the act (Cruz para.10). The Presidents impulsive reaction to the problems facing U.S. is causing a division in his own government. After instituting a policy that has caused many families to be separated, Trump turned to blame Democrats for problems created by that plan (Elliot para. 1). However, not even his own party members seem to be in agreement with his activities. Like the Democrats, Republican lawmakers have been adamant in changing the laws to suit the Presidents strategies for dealing illegal immigrants and refugees seeking asylum because only a handful of them are in support of family separation.

The Trump government has been using Mexican or rather immigrant children as a bargaining tool for Mexico and Congress to respond to requests on policy changes. There is no denying that the leniency with which immigrants have been treated in the past is the cause of today’s woes. However, while he wishes to reduce illegal immigration and its burden on U.S., there are several adjustments he can make to reduce the cruelty. Punishing the parents is one thing but to punish young children by separating them from their families permanently is wrong. Yes, the parents can be allowed to serve time in jail, but they should be given the hope of someday seeing their children again. Ideally, the immigrant children can be sent back to their homeland and reconnected with extended families or be released to the Mexican government as they await their parents to finish their sentences.
