ASSIGNMENT
REQUEST FOR CONSULTATION
Client Name: Manny Workman
Consultant Name:
Client Age: 47
Client Gender: Male
Client Occupation: night foreman in a factory
Background
Mr. Workman is responsible for making sure that work is completed in a safe and efficient manner, filling in when workers are ill or absent, and keeping track of employee attendance and performance On a typical evening, he gets to the plant at 10:00 p.m. and checks to see if any workers have called in sick. He calls replacement in if possible or makes plans to cover essential operations. He tours the plant floor to see if there are problems with the earlier shift and then heads to his office to look at the day’s orders, grabbing a cup of coffee from the machine on his way.
During the evening Mr. Workman takes hourly tours of the plant floor. If there are no problems, he returns to his office to do paperwork. About 2:00 a.m. he stops by the vending machines for a coke, a cheese sandwich, and a bag of chips. He then goes down to the shop floor and fills in for people taking breaks or steps in if a part of the line is having trouble keeping up. Usually there are three or four moderately difficult problems to solve in an evening. About once a week a major problem requires rapid response and clear thinking. These problems are unpredictable and can occur at any time during the shift. Some are a threat to the equipment or to the wellbeing of the workers. Mr. Workman is responsible for calling in assistance and making sure the problem is solved quickly.
Mr. Workman leaves the plant about 7:30 in the morning. He drives east on the interstate about 20 minutes and then another ten minutes on winding country roads on his way home. When he gets home his kids are getting ready for school. His wife has already left for work. Sometimes the kids are not ready and miss the bus so he has to drive them to school.
Current Problems Reported
When Mr. Workman gets home he is too tired to eat anything so he goes to bed. He can usually sleep about four hours before his elderly mother calls asking him to come over and help her. Sometimes he gets a nap in the afternoon, but by the time the kids are home from school, he cannot sleep any more. He can be very irritable and often yells at the kids for trivial behaviors.
Mr. Workman has complained to his doctor about stomachaches and indigestion. He also reports feeling tired all the time, but being unable to get to sleep. Last week when there was an emergency at the plant, he cut his hand on a piece of machinery.
Questions to be considered:
1. How would you describe Manny’s sleep patterns?
2. What do you see as factors that would disrupt his sleep?
3. What in his life suggests that he is not sleeping appropriately?
4. What recommendation would you make to Mr. Workman  to improve his sleep and his waking performance?
5. Why would you make these specific recommendations? Please provide reasons based on your text or other cited resource.
Please justify your answers by using the concepts from (and other scientific resources).
