Journalism standards and editorial controls require that a story be accurate and the treatment be balanced and fair. Accuracy involves not only verifying facts but also ensuring that the story as presented portrays the situation correctly. Balance requires presenting both sides of an issue, which often involves providing an opportunity for the various sides to present their views on the issue. Fairness involves not only ensuring that those involved in an issue have an opportunity to present their views but that a person or subject is not presented or treated in an unjust manner. The latter is particularly relevant on those issues high on the societal significance dimension on which the media may take an advocacy position.
