Why do states that have abolished parole release still operate parole boards?

• Because they are independent boards and cannot be disbanded by the state

• Because offenders sentenced under previous sentencing laws may still be eligible for parole

• Because board members were appointed by the governor and must complete their assigned terms of office

• They don't; those states that have abolished parole release no longer operate parole boards.
