I think that the finch population sometimes goes extinct because when the weather changes from dry to wet many finches die because they may have to small of beaks or to large of beaks and their genes are not passed on. So if you are rapidly changing the weather then the finches with small beaks that died are not passing on their genes for when it becomes wet again and the population of finches with small beaks is reduced. So going back and forth rapidly allows for less and less of the certain beak size to be passed on.
