The nose and nasal cavity are designed to warm, moisten and filter air, and trap particles. The mucus and ciliated mucosa in your nasal cavity trap particles and remove them from the respiratory system. The hairs around the nares prevent larger particles from entering the nose. The nasal conchae increase surface area to trap particles and warm, moisten air. The oral cavity is not set up to do any of these things as efficiently as the nasal cavity.
