A plane traveling north at 100.0 km/h through the air gets caught in a 40.0 km/h crosswind blowing west. This turbulence caused a beverage cart to brake free and begin rolling at 20.0 km/h toward the tail of the plane. What is the velocity of the cart relative to the ground? (you do not have to convert these since they are all the same unit)

Hi there

I think what you do here is draw two separate vectors, one going N along the y-axis (up) and one going W along the x-axis (left). Using the tail-to-tip method, the resultant vector will be somewhere in the third quadrant of the plane -- that information isn't important. Now, finding the resultant vector requires that you know the pythagorean theorem. If you use is correctly, you'll get 107.70 km/h; this is the speed of the plane. On the contrary. the cart is rolling in the opposite direction towards the tail.
