In school, it pays to be a generalist because you need to excel at a wide variety of disciplines from math to language to literature to do well in an academic setting. In the work world, the opposite is usually true. If you are a computer programmer, it doesn't matter any more if you weren't good at writing essays or pronouncing words in Spanish. If you are good at your specialized task, you will succeed in your job.
