Different cultures encourage conformity to a greater or lesser degree. The slogan demonstrates American feelings in the 1960s. There was a move towards individualism. Students can generate a creative response to this question. Common areas cited are rules, racism, free speech, unpopular wars, cult behavior, drug cultures, and rebellion toward authority. Some students will recall other such movements in history, such as when women sought the right to vote and the Roaring 20s.
