Basic requirements for security fencing are that it should be straight and free from any obstructions (such as weed and brush). Straight fences allow for effective surveillance and limit areas of concealment of adversaries. Fences should also have clear zones on each side in order to enhance surveillance so a threat does not bypass or easily defeat the fencing.  For example, if a tree is located in close proximity to a fence, an adversary could use the tree as a bypass, using the tree as means to scale the fence. The bottom of the fence should also be secured to prevent lifting or crawling under by tying the lower edge of the fence to rigid metal straps or weaving steel cables through the mesh to prevent it from being lifted. If the earth below the fence is loose or subject to erosion, the fence should be buried and secured below ground level.
