Vehicle barriers are classified as flexible or rigid. Flexible barriers move to some degree when struck by a vehicle. They include mesh fences, cables, and even large decorative concrete planters that will slow a vehicle's movement. One type of flexible barrier is the Jersey Barrier. These are modular concrete barriers that can be used to prevent and control traffic flow and speed, or deter vehicular traffic. They can be set up in a wall fashion to prevent vehicles from entering an area or be used to separate vehicles into lanes. In other cases, they can be set up in a serpentine manner, forcing a vehicle to slowly weave its way through the barriers, allowing detection elements (including guards) to assess the threat level of the vehicle and its occupants. Another type of flexible barriers are the traffic treadles that shred and deflate vehicle tires. These retractable spike-like barriers can be permanently mounted into the driving surface or used in a temporary application where they can be manually or automatically deployed. Rigid barriers withstand large kinetic energy forces and prevent a vehicle from running over or pushing the barrier out of the way. These include cylindrical bollards that vary in size and strength.  These bollards are designed to deter and stop vehicles from accessing a certain area. They can be fixed or stationary, and they can be retractable, allowing security personnel to manually or electronically rise or lower them into a secure concrete foundation to allow vehicular access.
