Combination locks (dial or push-button) are often used on safes, vaults, padlocks, and vehicle doors. They cannot be picked, but can be compromised if the combination to the lock is readily available to unauthorized users. Keypad locks generally rely on microcomputer technology and can be applied in a wide range of settings. Telephones, radios, automatic teller machines (ATMs), calculators, and microwave ovens all utilize keypads to enter data and operate the device. Electronic locks are commonly used when control of the locking device is maintained at a location some distance from the lock. These locks are used to control gates and visitor access to businesses and apartment buildings. A card-operated lock is often used to control access to restricted areas or an organization's physical assets and computer networks. A typical card-operated lock system requires the user to swipe, slide, or place a card near or into a reader that uses magnetic or radio frequency identification (RFID) to validate the card, and releases the lock if the card is valid.
