There are many benefits associated with PMSCs. PMSCs can support weak nation states that do not have the capacity to have a strong standing military.  PMSCs can provide a "surge" effect, serving as force multipliers for some countries that require additional military resources. These companies can also provide a great deal of expertise and specialization for clients. PMSCs have also been reported to be able to respond to crises faster (while also being better prepared) in comparison to the abilities of many nations and even NATO forces, making them an attractive alternative for peacekeeping missions. They are also able to get the tasks done faster since they are under contractual guidelines and not tied up by political issues, as could be the case of regular military organizations. In some cases, PMSCs are also cost-effective for nations; states are not burdened with the costs of a large, standing army.

There are some issues with PMSCs. First, these companies have operated in a "legal limbo" where there is a lack of international law that governs their use. Other issues include the poor quality of services that some companies provide, based in part on the use of unqualified staff.  There are also issues related to human rights abuses that may occur when these forces are used, due in part to the current lack of international law and conventions to control such abuses from private actors.  Furthermore, there are philosophical and ethical issues related to the private sector being involved in warfare- related activities for profit instead of the public good. There may also be a long-term impact of the presence of these companies. Professional soldiers may leave the public military to seek out better financial opportunities in the private sector.  Last, the use of PMSCs can alter foreign policy; their presence and use can alter geo-political relationships between nations and destabilize certain parts of the world.
