During the later Colonial era, economic and social changes were accompanied by a shift from a communal to an individualistic cultural perspective, particularly in regards to religion. As society evolved during the early years of America, the ability to function less as a community increased. The idea that individual wealth is seen as admirable, as well as a sign of individual worthiness seems to be as powerful as ever in modern times. It is only logical that those in power with wealth struggle to respect the needs of those less fortunate in their quest to protect what they have earned.
