Suggested Responses: Students should describe the view of children in the Middle Ages as non-persons in infancy and as little adults by age 7. Strong responses will describe implications of these beliefs - infanticide, harsh treatment, and expectations for mature adult behavior at a young age. The students should describe the Renaissance as a time when parents were concerned with rooting out inherent evil in children. Harsh punishment and "breaking the will" of children should be described. The 19th and 20th centuries should be described as periods of relative enlightenment, where training replaced "conquering" as a goal in socialization. Students should note current research showing that children in America are increasingly facing poverty, poor health, violence, and family dysfunction. Students' projections for the future - whether optimistic or pessimistic - should acknowledge these societal problems and risk factors.
