Suggested Responses: Students should explain that SIDS is the leading cause of death for infants under the age of 1, but that little is known about it: when it occurs, infants stop breathing and die for unknown reason. Students should explain to parents that SIDS is relatively uncommon (affecting 1 in 360 infants) but that it can affect infants of any ethnic group and that parents can lower their infants' risk. Students should caution parents not to smoke around their infant and to avoid drugs like cocaine and heroin, which also increase risk. Students should also tell parents to put infants to sleep on their back - never on their stomach!
