Suggested Responses: Students should choose an eating or toileting self-skill, describe it in detail, and list challenges to parents that include possible dangers to the child and inconveniences and/or frustrations for the parent. Cultural variations should be mentioned, e.g. Asian, Kenyan, or East African patterns of eating with different utensils or fingers and the degree of independence being encouraged. Cultural differences in toileting practices could include the following: African American tendencies to use reprimands and punishments for accidents and encouragement of early toileting independence; Korean and Japanese Americans' more casual approach; and East Africa's very early training practices.
