Suggested Responses: Students should describe ways that parents can reduce obesity risk both prenatally and in early childhood. They should explain that mothers who maintain good health and nutrition during pregnancy and avoid smoking reduce obesity risk. Prenatal malnutrition can influence the way a baby stores fat, contributing to obesity later in life. Students should explain that after an infant is born, breastfeeding reduces obesity risk, as does delaying the introduction of solid foods to after 17 weeks. Of course, parents should do their best to ensure that young children eat balanced, nutritional meals once solid foods are introduced.
