Based on research on infant memory, the best strategy for a childcare provider to use to help a young infant remember her after a week-long vacation is to:

▸ use the child's name frequently prior to the vacation. Even at this age, an infant's memory is enhanced by verbal labels.

▸ help the infant create a spatiotemporal map in which features of the environment - the decorations, spatial arrangement, and the people in it - remain the same before and after the vacation.

▸ wait for the child to mature. Infants of this age cannot recall people - except for primary caregivers - for longer than two days.

▸ use a lot of language with the infant just before the vacation. Infants rely on auditory cues in memory more than visual ones.
