As a teacher is reading a young child a picture book, she comes to a page with an illustration and no print, so she stops reading. The child protests, "Read that page!" The most likely explanation for the child's response is that:

▸ the child doesn't notice that the page has no printed words.

▸ the child has constructed a mental scheme of the book in which individual pages and story segments are believed to be connected.

▸ the child believes that the teacher is reading the illustrations on each page.

▸ the child is upset that the author did not include text on the page.
