With the push for academic achievement at younger ages, maintaining play-based learning environments becomes more difficult. However, considerable research supports the value of play in the areas of cognitive, social, language, and psychomotor development. Using examples of current research findings, write an advocacy letter to the local school superintendent that supports maintaining play-based kindergarten classrooms at local elementary schools in that school district.

Suggested Responses: Students should gather recent research findings in the areas of brain development, early literacy development, childhood obesity, social development, and creativity to support their advocacy letter. The letter should be written in layman's terms and names of researchers should be included informally. Play-based activities in the kindergarten classroom, such as dramatic play and block centers, can be used as examples of important learning environments for five-year-olds that are supported by this research.
