It is not uncommon for adults to observe young children engaged in sociodramatic play and to comment on how the children are "just playing." Select two sociodramatic experiences common to preschoolers (e.g., playing dress-up and house), and describe how these experiences contribute to cognitive and language development.

Suggested Responses: Student answers should reflect their understanding that cognitive development occurs as children gain an increasing facility with symbolic thinking, that language is a verbal manipulation of symbols, and that language facilitates cognitive manipulation of these symbolic objects, characters, and action. Dramatic play requires the cognitive manipulation of symbols at each level - actual, imaginary, language, and social interaction - an interaction that stimulates cognitive development.
