Suggested Responses: Students should identify and discuss three of the following social variations and the cultural origins of each: 1.) Access to peers: some children have no neighborhood peers and do not go to school; some have to work long hours. 2.) Altruism: cultures vary in the emphasis they place on cooperation and kindness, and certain life experiences, such as contributing substantially to housework as child, influence social behaviors. 3.) Variations in play: some children are more collective in the ownership of toys; some engage in more rough and tumble or teasing play. 4.) Friendliness and shyness: some children are socialized to be shy and reticent whereas others are encouraged to show social initiative. 5.) Second language acquisition: some children do not speak the same language as the majority of other children in a classroom.
