Based on his understanding of cultural difference in learning, a teacher assigns the Asian American students in his class quiet, individual math exercises and assigns the African American students a rhythmic group exercise pertaining to the same math concept. Why is this a poor strategy?

▸ The Asian American students will perform better if they have a performance-based exercise, and the African American students will benefit more from quiet individual exercises.

▸ Individual children have different learning styles, and cultural or ethnic background is only one of many factors that dictate learning style. The teacher made inappropriate assumptions about his students.

▸ All students will learn the topic better through the group exercise, so the African American children will have a better understanding of the concept than the Asian American children.

▸ All the children will be influenced by stereotype threat; none will perform well because they're expected to behave in a culturally specific way.
