Why do children in the primary grades remember more and for longer periods than when they were in the preschool years? In your answer, define the various forms of memory and discuss specific metacognitive strategies which can enhance it. Name at least three parts of the brain that have been associated in past research with specific types of memory, and identify the type of memory with which they have been identified.

Suggested Responses: Students should describe the characteristics of implicit and explicit memory, and further divide explicit memory into the categories of long-term memory, short-term memory, and working memory. They should discuss how the following metacognitive strategies can increase children's abilities to remember: rehearsal, labeling and organization, and attention. Students should state that primary age children gain new metacognitive skills, and that these skills contribute to their greater memory capacity. Students should describe three memory-related brain areas, such as the medial temporal lobe (related to implicit memory), the prefrontal cortex or the basal ganglia (related to working memory), or the medial prefrontal cortex or dorsal hippocampus (related to long-term memory).
