In the print watched/holistic stage of reading, children:

▸ point to and study print as adults read but rarely read independently.

▸ use sight vocabularies, sentence context, and phonics to construct meaning from print.

▸ are reluctant to read by themselves and prefer to observe while an adult reads to them.

▸ easily read familiar words but struggle to sound out unfamiliar ones.
