How are feelings of competence and social acceptance related in the primary years (ages 4-7)?

▸ Feelings of acceptance emerge first in the preschool years and lead directly to feelings of competence in the primary years.

▸ These feelings are inter-related; children who evaluate themselves positively in one of these areas will do so in the other as well.

▸ These feelings are somewhat unrelated; children can feel competent but not accepted or they can feel accepted but not competent.

▸ Feelings of competence emerge in the primary years and lead to feelings of acceptance at around age 8.
