You implement a "no hitting" rule in your classroom. After reprimanding a child for hitting another child in the class, you receive an angry call from the first child's parents. They don't agree with your "no hitting" policy. Which response would be most appropriate?

▸ In light of these cultural differences within your classroom, get rid of the "no hitting" rule and allow children to strike out physically as long as it is provoked.

▸ Explain to the parents that hitting is not tolerated because it poses a safety risk in your classroom, but that you will avoid simply punishing children for hitting and rather try to resolve the larger conflict that is taking place.

▸ Be in touch with the school guidance counselor since it appears that the child is living in an abusive home.

▸ Inform the parents that their practice of allowing physical violence in the home is looked down upon by most American families and can potentially place children in danger, and encourage them to meet with you to come up with more constructive forms of discipline.
