Do you feel Fuel cells can the future energy / power source for Spacecrafts, Landers, Automobiles etc?

Thanks & Regards,

Fuel cells more environment friendly, climate change control ?

Hydrogen fuel cells have a terrible EROI. I don't see them becoming mainstream in today's society.

Harvesting the hydrogen is the difficult part. You need to collect the hydrogen from the electrolysis of water. Electrolysis of water requires a lot of energy input to convert its gases, oxygen and hydrogen. I understand that fuel cells are highly efficient compared to combustion engines relying on fuel, but it's the input of energy that makes it manageable, in my opinion.

The idea sounds promising, but don't be fooled by the hype. If you base your opinion on pure science, you'd come to know that hydrogen has a low volumetric energy density, when compressed at commercial pressures ( 150 bar which is 2,100 psi ), it takes twenty times the volume of gasoline to hold the same amount of energy and as most hydrogen fuel cells require pure oxygen, oxygen needs to be carried as well.

@bio_man makes it sound all bad

The advantages: it can be made from water, anywhere that you have water; it can be stored indefinitely with minimal losses

The disadvantages: it's a bit dangerous to handle, it is a gas (and potentially leaks easily, though leaks aren't a safety hazard in a properly designed system
