Progressivism believed people could be cured of delinquency, insanity, and criminal behavior through the use of social science methods and individualized treatment. This reform movement resulted in new treatment programs such as the medical model and eventually led to more contemporary versions of rehabilitation and reentry. Unfortunately, gender and race discrimination continued for much of the time period since the progressives held to very traditional views regarding the role of women in society and did not affect significant change in the area of segregation.
