Although community service is generally viewed as a less-severe penalty (reference to Chapter 4's coverage of perception of sentence severity should be rewarded) it does have clear benefits for the offender (showing accountability for one's crime) and to the community (e.g., assistance to non-profit organizations and to poorly funded government agencies). However, those benefits may not be clearly understood by the public. Community service sentences may be more widely accepted by the public—and subsequently more widely used by judges—if news coverage or court media-relations efforts did a better job of showing those benefits. For example, news stories on how a local non-profit was able to provide needed services to the community as a result of the labor from persons doing community service obligations.
