After a judge sentences an offender to prison, he or she is transferred to state custody and will likely be taken to the state's reception or orientation facility where the classification process begins with the external classification process of determining the inmate's custody level and initial treatment plan. The inmate is then transferred to a state facility appropriate to his or her custody level and at that new facility the internal classification process begins in order to determine housing, program, and work assignments for the inmate. Reevaluation is conducted as part of the reclassification process to determine if the inmate's behavior and progress requires any change to housing, program, or work assignments.
