All sports have the option of using a coin to determine who starts first. Are you asking about major league sports like the NBA, NHL, or NFL? In that case, I've seen this happen in the NFL, not so much in the NBA or NHL:

Whoever wins the coin toss, the captain that team decides whether it kicks or receives.


It's the quickest and least controversial way to determine how the game starts, it's completely random.

Yes, it's also used in tennis for things like that. To elaborate, in tennis a coin toss is used in professional matches to determine which player serves first. The player who wins the toss decides whether to serve first or return, while the loser of the toss decides which end of the court each player plays on first.

If i am not wrong, one does not use a Fair coin in Boxing & Wrestling matches to start the match.

In basketball, there is a tip-off. Referee throws ball into the air, the player in the center position jumps up to tip it to a team member. The team that gets it first, in the next quarter, the other team starts automatically, then again in the 3rd quarter, but in the last quarter it defaults to the team that initially one the tip-off.

Similar thing in hockey, puck is dropped at the beginning of each period, there are 3 periods.

My son "Parth" while playing chess with me found a alternative way to Fair coin usage.

He took one White pawn & one Black pawn and then kept one white pawn in left hand fist and one black pawn in right hand fist & then toggled both the hands many times.

Then he told me to choose either of the two hands fist for selecting White or Black.
