A mixture of BaCl2 and NaCl is analyzed by precipitating all the barium as BaSO4. After addition of an excess of Na2SO4 to a 3.831-g sample of the mixture, the mass of precipitate collected is 2.826 g. What is the mass percentage of barium chloride in the mixture?

molar mass of BaCl2 = 208.23 g/mol

molar mass of BaSO4 = 233.43 g/mol

therefore moles of BasO4 formed = mass/ molar mass

2.113 / 233.34

= 9.05 x 10-3 mol

herefore mass of BaCl2 mixture = moles x molar mass

= 9.05 x 10-3 mol x 208.23 g/mol

= 1.885 g

% BaCl2 = (1.885 g / 3.988 g ) x 100

% BaCl2 = 47.2%
