When faced with a stressor, the sympathetic nervous system activates to either fight the stressor directly or flee the stress-producing situation. The stress hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine are released from the adrenal glands, and the body prepares itself by increasing heart rate, slowing digestion, widening pupils, sending energy to muscles, and other modifications that will prepare the body for action. The HPA axis also kicks in. The hypothalamus directs the pituitary gland to secrete a hormone that in turn activates the adrenal gland to release cortisol. The fight-or-flight is an immediate and fast-acting response, whereas the HPA axis is a slower, steady stream of resources for the body.
