Why did "teachers" in Stanley Milgram's obedience experiments deliver what they thought were potentially lethal electric shocks to "learners?"

▸ The learner requested that the shocks continue in order for effective learning to take place.

▸ The experimenter told the teachers to continue throughout the course of the experiment.

▸ The experimenter withheld payment to the teachers unless the experiment was seen through to completion.

▸ The experimenter threatened the teachers with receiving electric shocks themselves if they disobeyed.
