Heuristics, social categorization, and implicit personality theories each represent a "shortcut" in processing information about other people. Heuristics are mental "rules of thumb" that allow us to quickly make decisions about others. Social categorization allows us to group people based on their attributes. Implicit personality theories lead us to conclude that some characteristics of an individual are likely to be associated with other characteristics of that individual. In each case, we don't need to spend a lot of time or effort sizing up all possible attributes of each person we encounter.
