Answers may vary, but should contain the following for full credit:
In response to the disenchantment associated with housing the mentally ill in institutions, a movement toward deinstitutionalization was initiated during the middle of the 20th century. The concept was to transfer care of the mentally ill from institutions to the community, aided by advances in psychopharmacology that would allow people with severe mental illness to function independently while on their medications. However, without adequate transitional support from institution to community, many people with mental illness stopped taking their necessary medication, which led to adjustment problems such as poor functional status, unemployment, and homelessness. One consequence of these outcomes was the rise in incarceration of people with diagnosable mental health conditions. In short, the downward spiral initiated by deinstitutionalization was strongly associated with an increase in problematic behaviors.
