Why do origins of replication in various bacteria have conserved DNA consensus sequences?

▸ Consensus sequences are found throughout bacterial genomes and so would be found at the origin as well.

▸ The consensus sequence allows the origin to wrap into a circle and recruit replication initiation proteins.

▸ It is more efficient to use the same sequence multiple times in different genomes than to change it.

▸ Fewer mutations in the DNA occur at the very beginning of replication at the origin, hence why they are conserved as consensus sequences.

▸ Origins need to be recognized by replication initiation proteins to open up their AT-rich regions.
