Habits and routines develop naturally once a structure has been in place for a while. The organization as a whole is on the right track. However, as depicted in the figure, persons or processes may have deviated from the intended path. For example, duties that are no longer relevant or valuable are still performed out of habit, with no one questioning their legitimacy. Similarly, people may have trained to perform things in one way without considering an alternative, more efficient alternatives. Unfreezing entails helping people get perspective on their daily activities, unlearn negative habits, and be open to new ways of achieving their goals. For the wheels of change to turn, current practices and processes must be evaluated.
