"Right to Work Laws." What are right-to-work laws? What is the justification for them? Why would unions oppose them?

The "Right to Work Laws" in the US states that individuals cannot be compelled to join the labor unions or pay an amount for their employment to the labor unions as well. They have to right to select that they would be joining the union or not and will the union actually help them in their part to progress and be effective as well.
