A small metal ball is given a negative charge, then brought near (i.e., within about 1/10 the length of the rod) to end A of the rod. What happens to end A of the rod when the ball approaches it closely this first time?

A)strongly repelled
B)strongly attracted
C)weakly attracted
D)weakly repelled
E)neither attracted nor repelled

Due to charging by induction, and negative charge on the small metal ball, the end A of the rod will acquire charge opposite to that of the metal ball. Hence the end A of the rod will acquire positive charge. Also, since opposite charges attract each other, the negative metal ball and the positive charge on the end A of the rod will attract each other.

But, since a small amount of positive charge will be induced hence the ball and end A of the rod will be weakly attracted.
