Earth rotates on the plane of the ecliptic. The axis is always at an angle of 66.5º from the plane of the ecliptic. This means that the Northern Hemisphere is sometimes pointed towards, and at other times away, from the Sun.  This systematically changes the day lengths and the angle of the Sun above the horizon throughout the year; these changes cause the seasons.
