Why is it necessary to reduce the rate of heating to ~1 to 2 °C per minute near the actual melting point? Explain what effect a faster rate of heating might have on the observed melting point range.

It is necessary to reduce the rate of heating in order to determine if the substance is pure or impure.  Because pure compounds have the tendency to melt at a high temperature whereas the impure substance has the tendency to melt at a very low temperature that’s why the effect of faster rate of heating might give incorrect result of compound melting point.
