Discuss the yield and purity of your isolated product.  How can you determine the
Identity/purity of the products?  What factors contributed to poor yield/purity?  If there were more time/resources, what could have been done to improve your results?

The purity of the isolated product (2-hexanol) was determined by measuring the boiling point of the compound. However, the purity of the product was confirmed as the observed boiling point of the alcohol had been compared with it literature value 135oC. Also, the refractive index is another technique that used to determine the purity of the mixtures. Thus, the refractive index of purified alcohol that obtained in the experiment was 1.42at 24oC and the literature value was 1.414 at 20oC while the calculated corrected refractive index (1.4218 at 20oC) which confirmed the purity of the product of 2-hexanol. On the other hand, the percentage yield of purified 2-hexanol was 28% which is not good percentage. This low percentage yield of 2-hexanol indicated that there were some factors that contributed to this result. Firstly, the reaction of 16.8g of 1-hexene with 7mL of water did not shake well and thus the reaction did not get enough time to reach completion. Also, some of the reaction might dropped out while transferring the solutions from a beaker to round bottom flask and might spilled out  through heating.  Thirdly, the product was lost as it spilled out during the heating or through the purification using a gravity hot filtration and the reactant was impure. However, the percentage yield can be improved and have an accurate result by increasing the catalyst agent H2SO4 and to shake the reaction faster and vigorously. If more time were given, more fractions of the product can be collected and also obtained an accurate result thus accurate percentage yield.
