Responses will vary. Culture of poverty refers to a way of thinking and acting that is supposedly shared by families who live in poverty. This culture presumably reinforces and perpetuates itself through inadequate upbringing and ill-formed personalities. Objection 1: stresses a culture of depression, lack of hope, fatalism (these states of min are typically the effects of poverty, not causes). Objection 2: many poor people work, are religious, don’t smoke or drink etc., providing evidence that supports explanations founded on these personal deficits is often lacking.
