Responses will vary. Most of Canadian mass media have been owned by fewer than a dozen families. There are just five multimedia giants in the country. Over time, concentration of the privately owned media has increased. Media concentration involved mainly “horizontal integration” (controlling as much production as possible in their particular fields (newspapers, radio, television, etc.) until the 1990s when “vertical integration” became more widespread. Media firms sought to control production and distribution in many fields, becoming media “conglomerates.”
